Long Valley Caldera Getting Active
Swarm Starting?
A string of earthquakes has started in the Long Valley Caldera area as of today. So far, there have been about 6 very small magnitude quakes per hour since 11 am California time. See Long Valley Quakes, Current map for more information. We'll keep watching!
Long Valley Caldera was created 760,000 years ago when a massive volcanic explosion released very hot ash that later cooled. The eruption was so massive that the entire area collapsed like a deflating balloon. The collapse after the explosion released so much ash and pyroclastic material that it torched thousands or square miles around the area. Most of what is now the Western U.S. was covered by ash from this catastrophic event. A recurrence of this event would indeed be Apocalyptic in proportion. Several years ago, an extended earthquake swarm occurred in the area that had some geologists worried.
