African Quakes a Mystery at the Mountain of God?
The ongoing series of quakes in Tanzania are not only unusual, but have people in the area in panic mode and geologists clueless. The East Africa Rift Valley does run along a known fault line but has not seen much activity for many years. Panic gripped two East African cities as workers refused to enter buildings and people all over the area are sleeping outside at night for fear buildings may collapse on them. Some African seismologists have attributed the earthquakes to possible volcanic activity at Oldoiyo Lengai Mountain. While other "experts" stated that this unusual series of earthquakes is simply an earthquake swarm:"an episode of high earthquake activity in which the largest earthquake does not occur at the beginning of the episode and in which the largest earthquake is not substantially larger than other earthquakes of the episode."
This quote sounds like doublespeak and proves the point that nobody seems to know what is really going on, or what may happen in the future. We suggest you keep your eye on this seismic anomaly as we feel it is significant.
In a late article from AllAfrica.com, the USGS has stated that the proximity of the earthquakes to an active volcano, Ol Doinyo Lengai, is not sufficient to suggest that eruptive activity there may be undergoing a significant change. Interestingly, this volcano's name translates to the "Mountain of God". Do you suppose that God is trying to tell us something?
